Having led Mathwall Engineering through forty years of success in saloon car racing, turbo development and latterly historic racing, in 2007 Stuart Mathieson handed over the running of the company to his son Mark, who had spent the previous ten years working with Ilmor Engineering and Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines. Having grown up with Mathwall, Mark seemed destined to pursue a career in motorsport.
After completing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, followed by a master’s degree in Engine Design at Bath University, Mark spent four years at Ricardo Consulting Engineers before joining Ilmor Engineering as a valvetrain development engineer.
After two exciting years working closely with Paul Morgan and Mario Illien, Mark was appointed as the Head of Formula One Development.
Over a period of five years Mark built a successful team, embedding a strong development culture and capability throughout the company.
Mark then took charge of the Formula One Engine Programme for Mercedes, with a brief to further improve the effectiveness of the team and thereby establish a competitive edge on the race track.
